When I first met Karolyn Pho, it was at her debut Spring/Summer 2014 presentation in New York City’s West Village Makebish Gallery. Soon after being introduced, we quickly bonded over how she incorporated latex as a detail into one of her dresses (which was an absolute hit, as you’ll see later). Myself a believer of how latex should be brought back from out of the past, I immediately felt a connection with the works of this Los Angeles-born designer who, like me, is a NYC transplant.

After describing the collection and her aesthetics as a designer, we set up a time for me to pick her brain about a few inspirations and what led her to forming a career in fashion, as well as some advice for aspiring designers. Join me as I reflect on that conversation with Karolyn (and be sure to take a look at Pho’s Spring/Summer 2014 collection below).

Thank you for taking the time to talk with me. I would love to start from the beginning. When did you start professionally working as a designer?
December 2011.

How many years before that did you first know you wanted to design?
I had been a wardrobe stylist and costume designer for a few years with only months to go before graduation, and I felt I needed to take a step back to reevaluate. Designing was something I always secretly wanted, but felt hesitant to express because you don’t just declare yourself a designer — it’s about doing, creating and exhibiting. I didn’t feel comfortable speaking about design until I had something to show for it.

Was there a specific occasion inspiring you?
My boyfriend at the time was an insanely driven artist. That energy was inspiring and contagious, especially during this time when I was experimenting with a new art form.

Do you remember the first piece you ever sketched?
I’d been drawing and sketching silhouettes since I was 13 years old. My first “collection” was an equestrian-inspired blow out. Very 90’s Ralph Lauren, haha.

I love Ralph Lauren in the 90’s! What did it take for you to make this dream a reality, from sketching silhouettes to becoming a real fashion designer?
I completely immersed myself in it. I asked a lot of questions, fell on my face a few times, and most importantly, I was persistent. I’m still trying to make it happen every day.

How important was education and interning in that process?
Interning is everything. Figuring out what you don’t want to do is half the battle. It’s also free education and training in everything from gathering resources to industry etiquette.

Editor’s note: Karolyn Pho attended the California State University in Long Beach.

What do you love most about your career?
The high. When things fall in your favor, you get so high.

What would you say is the hardest part about being in this industry?
Emotionally detaching myself from the collections once they are finished. It’s all business after that, and I have to be able to listen and speak in an unaffected manner.

O.K., so let’s talk about that work for a bit. Can you tell us about your upcoming Spring/Summer 2014 collection?
I’m playing with textures this season by abstracting and repurposing.

What were some of your inspirations behind this lineup?
Self Preservation. Protection.

Do you have a favorite piece so far?
I do! My favorite pieces always make up the skeleton of the collection.

How would you describe your vibe?
The brand is minimal yet functional and feminine.

What type of customer is attracted to your clothing?
She’s classic in aesthetic and bold in personality.

Before we go, is there any advice you’d like to leave with the aspiring designers reading this?
Put your horse-blinders on and just push forward. There will always be skeptics.
